OVERVIEW
Alberta Tourism Information Service (ATIS) is Travel Alberta’s flagship tool for managing and promoting tourism businesses across the province on TravelAlberta.com and partner websites. While the platform had served its purpose, it was outdated, and needed to better meet the evolving needs of its users.
The goal was to redesign the user experience for tourism business operators, ensuring it effectively communicated and delivered value to users.

Background
As one of four UX designers, I joined a project already in progress, where I contributed to refining the taxonomy, creating and maintaining the design system. I also worked on the design and development of the dashboard, account flows, and listings, collaborating closely with a cross-functional team of designers, researchers, and developers.

Challenges and Learnings
- Collaboration and communication: Working in a multidisciplinary team reinforced the importance of early communication to prevent misunderstandings. I also learned how to navigate different perspectives and work styles.
- Balancing business goals and user needs: Finding the right balance between user needs and business objectives required compromise, advocacy for users, and being flexible.
- Empathy beyond users: I learned to consider not only the user experience but also the needs and constraints of clients, developers, and other stakeholders.
- Iteration and documentation: The first design is rarely the final one. I learned the importance of managing feedback, maintaining clear documentation, and articulating rationale for design choices.
